Although many investors still consider AES an independent power producer, or IPP, it more recently has transformed itself into a global diversified utility. With the 2011 acquisition of DPL (the holding company of Dayton Power & Light), roughly one third of its 2012 proportional adjusted gross margin will come from regulated utility operations, primarily in Latin America and the U.S. Midwest.
